Considering this is a blog that is based on my family I want to provide some background to readers that may be interested in our story. I believe telling our story will allow readers to appreciate all the challenging adventures of our family that we share on our blog.
In December of 2005 I was a single 19-year-old girl that gave birth to a beautiful baby girl that I chose to name Lia. I was no longer in relationship with my daughter’s biological father and was terrified of what was ahead of me as a young single mom. With all odds against us but a powerful family, friends, and faith base I was able to get my feet on the ground. I enrolled myself in college and found a job as a receptionist for a human resource firm in a local city.
I worked in my position as a receptionist for 6 years, as single mom and a part time student. My daughter’s birth father moved away and did not show any initiative or interest in supporting Lia financially or emotionally. I never received a penny in child support and made the decision to terminate my daughter’s his rights when Lia was 4 years old.
As a young single parent, I really did not have much interest in dating. I was really striving to get myself through school and focus on my tiny family. I went on a few first dates but not very many second dates. In fact, there was a guy I met in my office building that I went on a first date with at the age of 21 and did not have second date with him until 4 years later! I was very skeptical and suspicious of the males I brought into Lia’s and my life.
That guy I made wait four years for a second date is now my husband and best friend, Duane. He and I got married in 2014 and he legally adopted Lia in 2017.
Now the three of us are beginning the adventure of foster care together. We hope through foster care we can provide love and support to children who need it most. We also believe this new adventure will help us grow as a family and in our Christian faith.
